That looks like a modern version of the experimental optic for the L1A1 ... Gathering ambient light for rear projection

It was a regular production item made by Kern at the time. As far as I can tell, the only thing "experimental" about it was a reticle instead of a dot and the light gathering bit up top is a little different. I'm assuming the reason it isn't manufacturer marked is because it was not intended to be sold but that's a wild ass guess.

Shot the bnib SAN SIG 551 today: only had time for 30 rounds.

Ammo was Swiss GECO 55 gr. ball which gets some good marks from some people on its accuracy (for being ball…), but I didn’t do great today.

Truth is that I’m probably never doing great with iron sights anymore… but for now I’m blaming it on the ammo and not the Trigger Interface Nut…

So the case mouths are flat on one side, but they’re not ruined or kinked. I can live with it.

Ten-shot group at 100 = 3”. I don’t usually shoot ten-shot groups, but I wanted to make sure before I moved the sights.

Eight-shot group at 200 because I was going to correct my hold (shot at 9 o'clock), and then thought that was stupid if I was looking for data on sight adjustments... so

4.5" group at 200. I was hoping to be sub 2 MOA, but this is realistically as good as I can do any more.

Even with the front tritium blade folded back-- the front post is one thicc gal. Bravo!

Hey @kb377 - Is it possible that those are 552 handguards?

The rifle length are 551...the ones on the SBR/pistol are the SIG U.S. made Classic handguards.

I've got an ER model that I got around 2006 I think. Stripped off the plastic extension tube and original stock and replaced with aluminum tube and CTR stock. I next replaced the "fish gill" handguards with Swiss 551's. After Sig discontinued the 551A1, I was able to purchase a complete 551A1 lower from them that came with a Swiss stock. I never understood why Sig left the squared off top edge of the built-up area where I believe the select fire component pin would have come through. Early ER's had this area machined differently. Maybe these later receivers came from castings intended for select fire models. The 551A1 manual I got contains information for their select fire models. My Franken Sig 556 is as close as I'll get to an actual 551. I like it. It is accurate, has a great trigger, and has been utterly reliable. I can always pin on the original lower to use STANAG mag's as well. Ended up with a US-made folding/collapsing 556 SWAT Classic stock and a set of the US 551A1 handguards. When I ordered the 551A1 lower from Sig, they threw in a small packet of 556 spare parts. I guess they knew they were closing the casket lid on their 55X series at that point.

Been in place since 1947. Keeps getting better. Good enough to host Women's' Nationals IPSC a few years ago iirc. You're looking at the "Main Range", which is only 200 yards. There's a trap range over the berm to the left, and then if you drive past the trap range, there are 15 covered handgun bays - some of them 50 yards deep, and some of them more 'shallow' and specifically set up with handgun steel and / or Cowboy Steel. I think annual dues are only $120 / $10 per month.

My main gripe is that the BoD sold Lifetime memberships a few years ago to raise money to buy land for a 1000 yard range. I ponied up. So did a lot of other people. After we bought the land (that's "AFTER"...) the board discovered that there is an easement on a 20" gas main, and the gas company said that if we took one piece of excavation equipment onto the easement, they'd sue us out of existence.

So... no 1,000 yard range, no 600 yard range, and no 400 yard range. Ever. And we have land that we get to look at and pay taxes on. Forever. And somehow the Board wasn't tarred and feathered - or at least removed with a vote of "no confidence" or something.

Took family members shooting today at the other range I haunt... three of my kids, one boyfriend, one friend, my dad, two brothers, and two nieces and two nephews. 13 total. Started the day sunny and cold (for this part of the world...) at 28* F and ice on the benches and tables. No problem - we stoked the wood stove and had a rocking fire going in no time.

I spent a lot of time helping other people get sorted. But I shot, too. And my best bit was shooting the SAN Sig 550 (Red Rifle) and getting hit after hit at 400 on a 12" plate. Also got multiple hits on an IPSC-sized target at 500 by holding just at the top of the head with the 400-yard setting on rear sight.

Turns out that we weren't the only ones thinking that shooting might be better than shopping. At first we were the only ones there because we showed up a hair before 0900 (start shooting time), but it was semi-crowded before 1030. We bailed at 1130 and went for clam chowder and grilled oysters for lunch at a local favorite.

The 551 sat there on the rack and and not one single person shot it - or even asked about it. I couldn't believe it, but that means I'm not cleaning it, either.

Here is my sig p556. Serial number 61xx. It has a 3 bolt upper. I'm not sure what Swiss roll marks look like, but the hammer has H or I marked. No numbers on the bolt carrier.
