A little history:
a) Steyr USA contracted Sabre Defense to machine the receiver castings, produce the barrels, and assemble the rifles; Sabre Defense caught in arms trafficking in 2010, and inventory seized; BATFE released 33 parts kits to Steyr USA in May, 2012, and the 33 assembled rifles, with letter from Steyr USA describing rarity
b) @ 1,893 manufactured (1,860/2009- October 19, 2010; Sabre Defense ceased operations, and filed bankruptcy in 2011; 33- 2012)
- 1USAXXX-2USAXXX (Sabre Defense machined and marked A3 receivers; Sabre Defense chrome-lined, 1:9 twist button rifled barrel, threaded 13x1 left hand; A3 flashhider, and commercial-height rail, though a few military-height rails were used)
- 3USAXXX-3USAXXX (FN chrome-lined, 1:9 twist cold hammer forged barrel, using Austrian Steyr-imported mandrels, threaded 13x1 left hand; A1 “tulip” flashhider; variety of receiver markings and Sabre Defense or VLTOR barrels)
- 3USA001-3USA005 (CQB prototypes- “A3-CQB-PROTOTYPE” on left rear upper)
I have seen 1USA007-1USA999, 2USA010-2USA857, and 3USA001-3USA859.
4USAXXX commences the VLTOR Weapon Systems series.
