amherst has push pins, like on the early sp1,s. I have an early a2[ slab side -slick side] that came with the push pin. easier to mess with during cleaning and maintenance. just another option!

KNS makes a push-button push pin for the SP1 size hole as well (I have one in mine for ease of use too), but I suspect that the OP is looking to make the rifle as 'original' as possible.

Edited to add the 'push-button' for clarity...

What did the early Colt push pins look like? Ball detents or spring wires like HK? I dont really like the idea of either since the receiver is aluminum and the edge of that hole will wear over time.

A lot of these on GB with prices all over the place

also to your question I think the early push pins were ball detent.
Brownells used to sell one for their repop retro slabside lowers, of course it’s small pin .250

the Amherst large one:

as you can see its slightly tapered, ball ends up just outside of the receiver. one of my early A2s came with that pin. I got one of the amherst ones and its exactly like the one i have from colt, dont know if its nos or a very good repo. the bearing popped out on mine after 30 odd years of use.
the one i got is from amherst.
